Whole School Science Day – The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
This term’s Whole School Science Day saw every pupil become a scientist and engineer as we explored the inspiring story of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Learning how William Kamkwamba used determination, creativity and scientific thinking to build a windmill that transformed life in his Malawian village, pupils were challenged to solve their own engineering problems through a range of exciting, hands-on investigations.
Across the school, children designed, built and tested wind-powered creations appropriate to their age, from spinning windmills and wind-powered vehicles to investigating the most efficient wind turbine designs. They explored forces, renewable energy, fair testing and engineering while developing resilience, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Throughout the morning, pupils made predictions, carried out investigations, analysed their results and refined their designs, demonstrating that science is not just about discovering how the world works but about using knowledge creatively to improve it.
The day was a wonderful celebration of curiosity, innovation and scientific enquiry, reminding us all that great ideas can come from anyone with imagination, perseverance and a desire to make a difference.
